Biographies

Alan N. Schulman, M.D. graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, a Harvard teaching hospital. Dr. Schulman participated in two years of hepatitis research at the National Institutes of Health followed by postgraduate training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UCLA and the Center for Ulcer Research at the Wadsworth V.A. Hospital in Los Angeles, California. While in Los Angeles, Dr. Schulman did further research in viral hepatitis, Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Dr. Schulman is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Schulman is past Chairman of the Gastroenterology sub-section at Shady Grove Hospital, past Chairman of the Department of Medicine and past President of the Medical Staff also at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Dr. Schulman has four times been listed in the Washingtonian Magazine's "Best Doctors" list.
 
Sheila G. Levin, M.D. graduated from Brandeis University with a BA in psychology and has a Masters Degree in mathematics. She graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in Gastroenterology at the New England Medical Center Hospital in Boston Massachusetts. Prior to joining the practice in 1987, Dr. Levin was Chief of Gastroenterology for the Greater D.C. area Kaiser Permanente Health Plan. Dr. Levin is Board Certified in both Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. She is the past Chair of the Gastroenterology Division at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and has served on the active staff at both Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Suburban Hospital. Dr. Levin has three times been named to Washingtonian Magazine's "Best Doctor" list.
 
Robert M. Eisdorfer, M.D. graduated from Washington and Lee University and the New York State Program at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel. Dr. Eisdorfer did his internship, residency and was Chief Medical Resident at the State University of New York Medical Center in Syracuse, New York, where he stayed on as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of the V.A. Hospital Emergency Department. Dr. Eisdorfer completed his Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City. He is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. He joined Dr. Schulman and Dr. Levin in 1991. Dr. Eisdorfer is on the active staff at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He is past Chairman of the Gastroenterology Division at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and current Executive Committee Member. Dr. Eisdorfer has twice been named to the Washingtonian Magazine's "Best Doctor" list.
 
Julia C. Korenman, M.D. is a graduate of Princeton University and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She completed her internship and residency in the New York University Hospital system. She completed her Gastroenterology Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital/ Washington V.A. Medical Center. Dr. Korenman also completed a two-year Hepatology Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Korenman is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. She served for eight years as a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kaiser Permanente prior to joining our practice in 1998.
 
Lawrence A. Bassin, M.D. is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine.  He completed his residency program at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard teaching hospital, and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.  Dr Bassin completed his Gastroenterology and Hepatitis Fellowship at Yale University.
 
Colleen M. Kennedy-Smith, C.R.N.P., graduated from Indiana University with a BS in Nursing and went on to receive her MS as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Kentucky. Before joining Digestive Disease Consultants in 2005, she worked as a nurse practitioner for primary care physicians, Jan Bachowski, M.D. (1997 – 1999) and Paul T. Wielebinski, M.D. (1999-2001). Prior to her private practice experience, Ms. Kennedy-Smith held a nurse practitioner’s position at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD.
 
Marie Parlato, R.N., Clinical Manager received her nursing degree in 1968 from Long Island University and New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She worked as a recovery room nurse at Georgetown University Hospital and NIH. In 1981 she joined the nursing staff at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, where she was a recovery room and endoscopy nurse. She started with Digestive Disease Consultants in 1992 and became a certified gastroenterology nurse in 1994.
 
Susan Gray Sellers, R.N. received her BSN from the University of Maryland in 1995 where she previously had received a BS in Education. Shortly after graduation she began her career in medical/surgical nursing at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was hired by Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in 1997 where she worked in the ER, and, subsequently, in 2002, Susan joined Digestive Disease Consultants.
 
Evelyn Friedel Pyrdol, Practice Administrator [Email] has worked in healthcare administration since graduating with a BS in Education from the University of Maryland in 1972. She began her career as an administrator and office manager in medical offices specializing in orthopedics and mental health. She went on to develop and run a medical billing and consulting business (Professional Billing Associates, Inc.). In 1998, Mrs. Pyrdol was hired as the Director of Patient Financial Services for Baltimore Medical System where she directed the billing and staff education of 6 Community Health Centers in East Baltimore. In 2000, she was hired by a national practice management organization, Medical Management Professionals. As Operations Manager, she directed the billing and client support for both the University of Md. Radiology Department and their Radiation Oncology Division. In June of 2002, she was hired as the Practice Administrator for Digestive Disease Consultants.
